CHRISTMAS DAY: THE DAY OF EXCHANGING GIFTS
Phomolo Rapau |
Christmas is a beautiful day to celebrate the birth of Christ by giving out gifts to others.
Giving gifts to each other especially on Christmas day is practicing what happened on the day that Christ was born where three wise men presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
When is Christmas celebrated?
25 December is a day when Christmas is celebrated according to the Western Calendar and churches. Although the month and date of the birth of Christ are unknown but the churches in the fourth century fixed the date as December 25 which corresponds to the date of the winter solstice on the Roman calendar. It is exactly nine months after annunciation on March 25, also the date of the Spring equinox.
What is the importance of this day and/or why is it important for this day to be celebrated?
It is very important for us to gather in Christmas Day as families and religious people to celebrate the joy, light and peace that the birth of Christ has brought in our lives. This is also a remembrance of how God gave the world a gift beyond words, the unspeakable gift of His Son.
"Normally, on someone’s birthday we would buy them gifts, therefore the same should be done on the birth of Christ..."
On this day, we must not only invite people but we must equally invite the owner of the day whose name is Christ as mentioned in the book of David Jeremiah “All the Christmas presents in the world are nothing without the presence of Christ.”
Why do we celebrate Christmas by giving gifts?
The scriptures tell us that “for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believe in Him will have eternal life”. We must always refer to that scripture whenever we talk about giving. God firstly gave us a gift, His Son Jesus Christ to save us from our own sins, what greater love is this? Giving is a symbol of love and by so doing, this means that we are practicing what God is expecting of us.
Normally, on someone’s birthday we would buy them gifts, therefore the same should be done on the birth of Christ. But since He is not around to accept gifts, this tradition is encouraged amongst the Christian community.
Let us not forget the birth of Christ which transformed our lives for the better.
All glory be to God for His greatest gift - Jesus Christ. (2 Cor 9:15)
"Merry Christmas and prosperous new year‼️"
